He was born in 1956 in the island of Kos, Greece. He studied electronics.

In 1979 he starts practicing photography. He worked in Paris as a freelance photographer. In 1985 he becomes member of the Photography Center of Athens. Many of his photos are in private collections and at the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography. He has participated in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.

He has worked as freelance cameraman for ARD - German TV for most of his career and has filmed many documentaries and feature stories. Stelios Efstathopoulos, is representative of FAOS TV Productions Hellas E.E.
